However, here is a general correspondence between the two systems:
HSK to CEFR Levels
- HSK 1 (150 words): Corresponds to A1 (Beginner).
- Basic proficiency, understanding and using familiar everyday expressions and simple phrases.
- HSK 2 (300 words): Corresponds to A2 (Elementary).
- Can understand and use simple expressions related to personal information, shopping, and daily tasks.
- HSK 3 (600 words): Corresponds to B1 (Intermediate).
- Able to deal with most situations that might arise while traveling in a Chinese-speaking environment.
- HSK 4 (1,200 words): Corresponds to B2 (Upper Intermediate).
- Can produce detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to their interests and experience.
- HSK 5 (2,500 words): Corresponds to C1 (Advanced).
- Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
- HSK 6 (5,000 words): Corresponds to C2 (Proficient).
- Can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
Notes:
- HSK 1–2 focuses on basic everyday communication.
- HSK 3–4 reflects intermediate proficiency, suitable for handling a variety of social, professional, and academic situations.
- HSK 5–6 is designed for advanced learners, often used in academic or professional settings where a high level of proficiency is required.
While the HSK exam is useful for measuring vocabulary and reading skills, it doesn’t directly evaluate speaking and writing skills in the same way the CEFR does. However, it offers a good gauge of general proficiency for Mandarin learners.
